Limburg has a number of strong sectors, namely high-tech systems, life sciences & health, agri-food, logistics, chemicals & materials, and smart services. The most important clusters in these sectors are located on the Brightland campuses: Chemelot Campus, Maastricht Health Campus, Smart Services Campus, and Campus Greenport Venlo.
The highly developed logistics sector is particularly evident at Greenport Venlo. The most important business parks for logistics (with numerous warehouses and distribution centers) are Fresh Park Venlo (the largest European food hub), Trade Port West and Trade Port Noord in Venlo, and Smakterheide and De Blakt in Venray. This multimodal region has a strong road network connecting to Eindhoven (A67), Nijmegen and Maastricht (A73), Mönchengladbach (A74/BAB61) and Duisburg (BAB40). There are also excellent rail (Brabant route) and water connections (the Meuse).
The largest inland rail terminal in the Netherlands is currently being built at Trade Port Noord. On Thursday, March 5, Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen will deliver new and modified rail in Venlo. It is expected to be operational in September 2020. In 2019, the Venlo-Venray region was named the leading logistics region in the field of cross-border e-fulfillment.
Other important logistics hubs are located at Holtum-Noord in Born (municipality of Sittard-Geleen) and Sint Joost (municipality of Echt). The Holtum-Noord business park is located along the A2 motorway and has a direct connection to the motorway entrance and exit. With its latest expansion, the Barge Terminal Born has grown into one of the largest inland terminals in the Netherlands. The Sint Joost business park is located at the junction of the A73 and A2 motorways.

The successful Trade Port concept
A cornerstone of the Netherlands' prominent economic position
The Netherlands is a leading player in the strong commercial climate of the European Union. Around 6,300 foreign companies have established their European operations in the Netherlands. Almost 30 percent of all goods transported in Europe today are handled by Dutch international transport companies.
Most of the Netherlands' successful commercial activity is centered around three cornerstones. First, the Port of Rotterdam, Europe's largest and busiest port. Second, Schiphol Airport, the third busiest air freight center in Europe. And third, the Venlo/Eindhoven region, operating on the basis of the successful Trade Port concept.
A high-profile, flexible location
The Trade Port complex is the center of combined industrial/logistics activities in the southeast of the Netherlands. It is an extensive, state-of-the-art commercial development site that combines fully integrated road and rail transshipment facilities with a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure. It is also a highly flexible business park. Trade Port has been designed to international standards and offers optimal accommodation for virtually any type of commercial enterprise, from storage, logistics, and distribution to manufacturing and recycling to research, development, or service industries.
Well located
Commercial developers benefit from Trade Port's central location in the heart of the European market, home to more than 350 million consumers. Trade Port is located near the intersection of the E34/A67 and A73 motorways, as well as the intersection of the Rotterdam-Eindhoven-Venlo and Arnhem-Nijmegen-Roermond railway lines.
To facilitate access to all trade port buildings, an international 4-digit addressing system has been implemented in recent years. This system was initially developed by the Port of Rotterdam, ensuring an effective, internationally recognizable system. Trade Port Venlo has adopted this system and used it for its expansions.
Part of the big picture
The multimodal transport facilities at Trade Port complement those at Rotterdam and Schiphol. Both facilities have an interest in further strengthening Venlo's position in European freight traffic. In fact, freight handling activities are increasingly being relocated from Rotterdam to the interior as a result of increasing traffic congestion in the densely populated agglomerations in the Randstad. This is one of the reasons why a High-Speed Container Shuttle Service now offers direct, daily rail connections between Trade Port and the Rail Service Center in the Port of Rotterdam.
Ready for Europe 2050 with the Trade Port concept
The Venlo region has grown to become one of the most important logistics centers for the European market of the 21st century. With its central location, direct infrastructure connections to major European economic centers, and terminal facilities for almost every type of combined transport, Venlo offers clear strategic advantages for companies that want to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the changing European market. An important part of that strategic advantage is Venlo's highly successful Trade Port concept.
